933,574. Lifting jacks. E. SEPPELER. Dec. 5, 1960 [Dec. 3, 1959], No. 41852/60. Class 78 (3). A telescopic lifting apparatus comprises a tubular member 6, closed by a cap 7 and slidable between tubular members 5, 10 secured to a housing 1, and is extended by raising a hand lever 4 to rotate a cam 3 from the position shown, whereby a sliding tube 12 is raised and locked to the member 6 which is thereby raised. As the member 6 is raised, oil is raised from a reservoir in the housing 1 through a non-return valve 11 to prevent retraction of the device. The tube 12 is locked to the member 6 by means of a conical member 19, which rests on a disc 20 supported on a normally inoperative prestressed spring 17 engaging a flange 12a on the tube 12 and which engages, through balls 28, a cone 22 which is slotted and outwardly expandible to grip the member 6. By oscillating the hand lever 4 between the position shown and its raised position, the member 6 is raised step by step. To lower the member 6, the hand lever 4 is lowered from the position shown so that the cam 3 permits the tube 12 to be lowered to its full extent under the action of spring 21 and releases the ball valve 15 whereby oil under pressure within the members 5, 6 can return to the reservoir in the casing 1.
