In a ratchet jack, lowering of the rack 18 is effected by extending a handle portion 12, connected to a sleeve 13 by a bayonet joint (not shown), into engagement with one arm 32 of a spring 32, 33, which then over-rides weaker spring 21, and by bearing on top of roller 25 through arm 33 effects release. of the pawl 20 when the handle is fully raised. When the handle is moved downwardly about pivot 14 first a fixed cam 37 directs pawl 20 into a rack tooth above that previously engaged, then the portion 33a of spring arm 33 moves below roller 25 and retains pawl 20 in this tooth, and finally spring arm 32 is moved into engagement with a sliding rod 29 so overriding spring 30 and releasing pawl 26 from the rack. Thus on subsequent upward movement of the handle the rack is lowered and pawl 26 is freed to re-engage the rack. With the handle portion 12 withdrawn spring 32, 33 is rendered inoperative so that oscillation of the handle effects upward movement of the rack in the usual manner.
