Selector mechanisms are provided at two feeds of a three-feeder single or double cylinder machine and control the operation of needle jacks such that needles which do not knit at either of two feeds knit at the third feed. For this purpose tipping jacks 4 are associated with the needles and all needles are tilted by a cam 9<SP>1</SP> engaging their lower butts 15 at the first feed to cause the upper butts 13 to engage in a camway 14. Immediately after this action selectors 2, as determined by a pattern drum at the first feed, are raised to return their associated jacks 4 to their original positions whereby the butts 13 are removed from the camway 14. The butts 13 remaining in the camway 14, and thereby their jacks 4, are subsequently raised by upthrow cams 20 at the first feed to select the corresponding needles for knitting at that feed whereafter the jacks are lowered by a downthrow cam 23<SP>1</SP> while the remaining jacks 4 pass the upthrow cam 20 at a low level. The bottom of the downthrow cam 23<SP>1</SP> is provided with an inclined recess 29 on which the jack butts 13, which have been raised by the cam 20 and subsequently lowered by the cam 23<SP>1</SP>, engage and are consequently urged out of engagement with the camway 14 without being lowered sufficiently for the lower butt 15 of the jacks to engage the lifting cam 10<SP>1</SP> at the second feed. Those jacks then continue in this slightly elevated position past the upthrow cam 21 of the second feeder still with their butts 13 free of the camway 14 until eventually they are lowered to their original level by their lower butts 15 engaging the cam 27 following the second feed. Thereafter they pass the upthrow cam 22 of the third feed at this low level. Jacks which have not been active to cause needle selection at the first feed are again tilted by a tipping cam 10<SP>1</SP> at the second feed to move the butts 13 into the cam-way 14 and, again as determined by their associated selectors 2 governed by a pattern drum at the second feed, certain of these jacks are tilted back to remove their butts 13 from the cam-way 14. Those remaining in the cam-way are raised by upthrow cam 211 and lowered by downthrow cam 24<SP>1</SP> which is recessed at 30 in a similar manner to cam 23<SP>1</SP> to remove their butts from the cam-way and to avoid these jacks engaging the tipping cam 1 at the third feeder, whereafter they are lowered by cam 27 to their original low level in which position they pass the upthrow cam 22. The remaining jacks which have not been raised at the first or second feeds are engaged by tipping cam 11<SP>1</SP> causing all of them and their associated needles to be raised by upthrow cam 22. Tipping cams 10<SP>1</SP>, 11<SP>1</SP> have their upper portions 10<SP>2</SP>, 11<SP>2</SP> recessed to provide clearance for the lower butts 15 of the jacks 4 when they are lowered by cams 23<SP>1</SP>, 24<SP>1</SP> and engage recesses 29, 30, respectively.
