788,107. Knitting - machines. BILLI, G Nov. 5, 1954 [Nov. 10, 1953; Jan. 14, 1954], No. 32072/54. Class 74 (2). Jacks 6, 7 each having a butt or butts arranged at two or more levels to engage patterned controlled cams 20, 21 are arranged below the needles of a circular machine, the jacks arranged below needles having long butts 5a having short butts 6b, 7b, and the jacks beneath needles having short butts 5b having long butts 6a, 7a. The butts on the needles may be replaced by corresponding additional butts on the jacks. The patterning cams 20, 21 may be controlled by cams arranged on the end face of a gear wheel, or as shown in Fig. 19, the patterning cams 146 may be controlled by coaxially mounted cam discs 160, pivotally mounted members 167 being interposed between the discs and the patterning cams. The patterning may be nullified by rods 171 operated from a pattern drum which rods hold the members 167 away from the discs 160. The patterning cams may be shaped as shown in Fig. 9 or be triangular so as to avoid damage to the jack butts during reciprocatory knitting. The butts on the jacks may also be of triangular form. The patterning cams may either lift the jacks and needles to the desired patterning height, or to an intermediate height, a dividing cam ring provided to raise partly raised needles.
