Abstract

The invention comprises 1,1,5,5-tetrachloropentan-3-one, and 1,5,-dichloropenta-1,4-diene-3-one. The first compound is prepared by reacting oxalyl chloride with vinyl chloride, in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, such as aluminium chloride, and a solvent, e.g. carbon tetrachloride, methylene chloride, dichloroethane and carbon disulphide. The product upon thermal distillation or treatment with weak alkali such as sodium bicarbonate yields the diene.
