Abstract
Haloacetylhalides are produced by heating at elevated temperature and pressure an anhydrous mixture of carbon monoxide and a polyhalogenated methane in the presence of a substantially anhydrous Friedel-Crafts type catalyst. Specified polyhalomethanes are carbon tetrachloride, -bromide or -iodide, chloroform, bromoform, iodoform, fluoroform, methylenechloride, -bromide, -iodide or -fluoride, trichlorofluoromethane and chlorotrifluoromethane. Catalysts which may be used are aluminium chloride or bromide, ferric chloride, zinc chloride, tin tetrachloride, titanium tetrachloride, zirconium tetrachloride and boron trifluoride, in organic complexes like aluminium chloride/sodium chloride or zinc chloride or copper chloride or organic complexes such as aluminium chloride with benzene or chloroform. The catalyst may be promoted by an added acid, e.g. hydrochloric acid, and may also be supported for example on carbon, barium sulphate or kieselguhr. In the examples, (1) carbon tetrachloride is reacted with carbon monoxide in the presence of aluminium chloride or ferric chloride to give trichoracetyl chloride and some phosgene, perchloroethylene and hexachloroethane; (2) chloroform and carbon monoxide are reacted in the presence of aluminium chloride giving dichloroacetyl chloride and some phosgene; (3) methylene chloride and carbon monoxide over aluminium chloride with hydrogen chloride give monochloro-acetyl chloride.
