Abstract

1283651 2,3-Dichloro-1,3-butadiene BP CHEMICALS Ltd 19 April 1971 [24 March 1970] 14086/70 Heading C2C 2,3-Dichloro-1,3-butadiene is prepared by reaction of 2,3,4-trichlorobutene-1 with an aqueous alkali solution at elevated temperature in the presence of nitric oxide. Alkalis specified are sodium and potassium hydroxide. The aqueous alkali solution may also contain an oxygen scavenger, e.g. sodium sulphide, a free radical inhibitor, e.g. t-butyl-catechol, or a demulsifier. The reaction may be batchwise, semi-continuous or continuous. A steady flow of a nitrogen-nitric oxide mixture is preferably maintained throughout the reaction apparatus. The product may be recovered by distillation.
