Abstract
Unsaturated polyesters of low acid number and good colour are made by condensing an a -unsaturated, a ,b -dicarboxylic acid or anhydride with excess of a glycol until the acid number of the reaction mixture is 170-50, adding between about 0,3 and 0,4 moles of dicyclopentadiene per mole of the acid or anhydride to the reaction mixture and then heating the reaction mixture at 180 DEG -210 DEG C. until a product having an acid number of below 30 is produced. Condensation may be effected in the presence of hydroquinone. Specified acids are maleic, fumaric, itaconic and mesaconic acids and specified glycols are ethylene and the propylene glycols. The resulting polyesters may be mixed with styrene and hydroquinone and later cured by catalysts and promoters. Specification 721,249 is referred to.
