Abstract

Unsaturated polyesters are made by reacting (1) an intermediate product comprising a component having one free carboxyl group and made by reacting an anhydride of an unsaturated polycarboxylic acid (with or without a saturated polycarboxylic acid or anhydride) and a monohydric alcohol with (2) either a product containing at least three hydroxy groups and made by reacting a saturated or or unsaturated polycarboxylic acid or anhydride with a polyhydric alcohol (one of the reactants being at least trifunctional) or with starting materials necessary to produce such a product. The polycarboxylic acid reactant of component (2) may be unreacted material used in making component (1). Monocarboxylic acids may be included in the reaction mixture (1) or (2) and other polyfunctional ingredients may be included in the reaction mixture (1). Specified for intermediate product (1) are the reaction products of (a) maleic anhydride and cyclo-hexanol; (b) maleic anhydride and oleyl alcohol; (c) maleic anhydride, phthalic anhydride, citric acid, benzoic acid, n-hexanol, cyclo-hexanol, trimethylol propane and di-ethylene glycol; (d) maleic anhydride, phthalic anhydride, di- and tri-meric fatty acids, benzoic acid, oleyl alcohol, n-hexyl alcohol, ethylene glycol and trimethylol propane; (e) maleic anhydride, benzyl alcohol, n-hexanol, triisopropanolamine and ethylene glycol. Specified for product (2) are (f) a polyester of azelaic acid (or maleic anhydride), phthalic acid, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol and trimethylol propane; (g) a polyester from phthalic anhydride, maleic anhydride, succinic anhydride, N-methyl ethanolamine, triethanolamine, ethylene glycol and trimethylol propanes; (g) ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol and residual acid anhydride from component (c); (h) ethylene glycol and residual polycarboxylic acids and anhydrides from component (d); (i) a mixture of phthalic anhydride, dimerized linoleic acid, benzoic acid and ethylene glycol. The polyesters may be copolymerized with vinyl monomers (e.g. styrene) using peroxide catalysts (e.g. butyl perbenzoate or dibenzoyl peroxide).
