Abstract

The invention comprises reacting terephthalic acid and ethylene oxide in an aqueous medium in the presence of a terephthalate to form bis - (beta - hydroxyethyl) terephthalate, characterized in that the molecular proportion of water to terephthalic acid, at the start of the reaction, does not exceed 10 : 1 and preferably is of the order of 8 : 1. Apart from such a modification the reaction conditions and the method of isolating the product may, in general, be the same as in the method of the parent Specification. In an example a heated mixture of water and terephthalic acid in the molecular proportion of about 8 : 1 is reacted with ethylene oxide. The yields of product and the amount of ethylene oxide used are compared with those in a comparison experiment in which the water and terephthalic acid are used in the molecular ratio of about 22 : 1.
