Abstract
An alkyl sorbate is obtained by passing the vapours of an alkyl ester of 3 : 5-dialkoxy hexanoic acid through a reaction zone containing a catalytically active form of silica heated between 250 DEG and 500 DEG C., the alkyl group in each of the alkoxy radicals being normal and containing from one to four carbon atoms and recovering an alkyl sorbate from the reaction mixture. Preferably, the reaction temperature is between 350 DEG to 400 DEG C.
