Abstract
1,262,873. Unsaturated polyesters. BRITISH RESIN PRODUCTS Ltd. 7 March, 1969 [8 March, 1968], No. 11548/68. Heading C3R. An unsaturated polyester resin is made by condensing an α-unsaturated α,#-dicarboxylic acid or anhydride with a molar excess of a glycol having at least 3 carbon atoms until the acid value of the reaction mixture is between 200 and 80 adding from 0À01 up to less than about 0À3 mole of dicyclopentadiene per mole of the dicarboxylic acid to the reaction mixture and heating the reaction mixture at between 170‹ and 230‹ C. until a product having an acid value below 50 is produced. Specified glycols are propylene glycol, 1,3-butylene glycol and neopentyl glycol and mixtures thereof with ethylene glycol, and specified acids are itaconic, mesaconic, maleic and fumaric acids.
