Abstract
920,024. Tufting-machines. SINGERCOBBLE Inc. Dec. 27, 1961 [April 13, 1961], No. 46213/61. Class 112. A tufting-machine is provided with a looper book having two bills on which high and low tuft loops are formed respectively. The hook comprises a lower bill 49 having a print 50, and an upper bill 53 having a down-turned point 55 which extends beyond the point 50, the points being opposed to the direction of work feed. A U-shaped leaf spring 57 has its lower limb secured by pins 58 to the looper shank, and its upper limb is formed with an intermediate bulged portion 60, a transversely elongated portion 61 the upper end of which resiliently engages the point 50, and an outwardly flared free portion 62. The needle 20 engages portion 62 to separate portion 61 from the tip 50, and thereafter moves freely within the bulged portion 60. The yarn 25 is fed to the needle selectively at either one of two speeds by the means described in Specification 853,746. At the faster rate of feeding, the loops are formed on the lower bill 49 and are severed by the knife 63 at the looper throat 48 to form high tufts 68. When the yarn is fed at the lower rate, the loop 67 previously formed on the lower bill 49 is drawn by the increased yarn tension past the spring portion 61 and print 50 to be caught by the point 55 of the upper bill 53. Said loop is subsequently severed at the looper throat 54 to form a low tuft 69. Specifications 735,019 and 920,023 also are referred to.
