In a sewing machine having a plurality of needles and a single threaded looper co-operating therewith, and in which needle thread loops are engaged with the looper when the needles are raised, a thread-catching member, movable between the looper and the throat plate to co-operate with a cutting blade and clamping spring for severing the needle and looper threads, is so arranged that its path of movement extends through said needle thread loops when the looper is located in its foremost end position. A thread-catching member 7 having hooks 8, 9, moves from a retracted position, as shown, to a forward position through the needle thread loops 1a, 2a engaged with the threaded looper blade 3. During the forward movement of member 7 the needle thread loops 1a, 2a are displaced laterally by the hooks 8, 9 and are finally positioned behind hook 9, while the loop 5a of the looper is displaced laterally by hook of the looper, is displace dlaterally by hook 8 to engage behind the latter. During the return movement of member 7, loops 1a, 2a are shifted by hook 9 into engagement with a cutting blade 10 and clamping spring 11, while hook 8 shifts loop 5a into engagement with said blade and spring.
