In a tufting-machine in which the tufts produced by a single needle may be either cut or uncut, for those tufts which are not to be cut the yarn tension is increased so as to pull them off the looper hook. A looper hook 3, Figs. 1 and 3, has a bill 7 pointing opposite the direction A of work feed, the lower edge of bill 7 being bevelled as at 8 towards the tip. A spring clip 4, secured by screws 6 to the hook, has an outwardly flared end 9 which directs the needle 1 between clip 4 and bill 7. The yarn loop 10 is retained on bill 7 by clip 4 and the work feed normally carries the loop against the reciprocating cutting blade 5. If the yarn tension is increased sufficiently to overcome the clip 4, the loop slides up the incline 8 to leave the bill. It is stated that varying yarn tension may be produced by the yarn feed arrangements described in Specifications 735,019 and 780,370; or by retracting the hook for a selected distance. In a modification the clip 4 is formed with a concave portion to accommodate the needle. In a further modification the clip is located on the side of the bill away from the needle. In the modification shown in Fig. 13, the cutting blade 19 carries a spring finger 21 which co-operates with the tip of the looper hook 20 to hold the loops thereon.
