Abstract

918,234. Electrophotographic plates. RANKXEROX Ltd. Feb. 23, 1959, No. 6136/59. Class 37. An electrophotographic plate comprises a support carrying a layer of photoconductive insulating material and a transparent protective layer less than 0.1 mils. thick of an insulating or photoconductive insulating material with resistance to wear and tear superior to that of the underlying layer. In a preferred embodiment a layer of amorphous selenium or a mixture of arsenic and selenium between 0.05 and 1 mils thick is deposited on a conductive base. A protective layer 0.01 to 0.1 mils thick of zinc sulphide, silica, titania, silicates, or alkaline earth fluorides is coated on the layer by spraying brushing, painting, or in the case of zinc sulphide, by evaporation in vacuo. The sensitivity of zinc sulphide coated selenium or seleniumbased elements of this type is enhanced by heat treatment. For instance a zinc sulphide protected arsenic selenium element may be improved by heat treatment for 1-2 hours at 80-200‹ C. in an oxidizing atmosphere.
