Abstract
Carbon dioxide gas is freed from carboncontaining sulphur compounds, for example carbon oxysulphide, carbon disulphide and mercaptans, by leading the carbon dioxide gas, containing 5 to 15% by volume of water vapour, in the presence of oxygen and at a temperature below 100 DEG C., over an activated carbon impregnated with a basic reacting compound of an alkali metal or ammonia, the quantity of which compound is equivalent to less than 0,7 mole of the corresponding oxide per kilogram of activated carbon, thereby forming alkali metal sulphate or ammonium sulphate which remains in the activated carbon. When the active carbon is exhausted it may be regenerated by washing with hot water.
