Abstract
Ammonium thiocyanate is converted into ammonium sulphate by adding the thiocyanate, in portions or continuously, to sulphuric acid of at least 20% concentration, at a temperature between 90 and 130 DEG C., in such amount or at such a rate that no free thiocyanate ions are present in the reaction mixture for more than 10 seconds. The acid concentration is, preferably 78%, and the thiocyanate may be added as the 20-30% lye obtained by scrubbing out hydrogen cyanide from coke oven or similar gases with an ammonium polysulphide solution. To avoid the reduction of the sulphuric acid concentration, the ammonium thiocyanate may be added as a concentrated solution, slurry, or solid, or fresh sulphuric acid or sulphur trioxide may be added. Carbon oxysulphide, contaminated with HCN and HCNS, is obtained as by-product. These contaminants may be removed by passing the carbon oxysulphide through the unconverted lye.
