Abstract

In the recovery of sulphur from gases containing hydrogen sulphide by washing these with an alkaline or ammoniacal solution containing an organic oxygen carrier and then treating the solution with oxygen or air to oxidize the hydrogen sulphide to sulphur, the oxidation step is carried out at a temperature below 25 DEG C. As oxygen carriers hydroxybenzene or other cyclic oxy-compounds may be used.
