Abstract
871,076. Gas purification. OFFICE NATIONAL INDUSTRIEL DE L'AZOTE. Oct. 16, 1957 [Oct. 16, 1958], No. 32389/57. Class 55 (2). In a process for removing sulphur-containing compounds from a gas or vapour, the gas or vapour is contacted with a porous mass primarily consisting of a compound of the formula M 2 O 3 , M<SP>1</SP>O, in which M is a metal capable of forming a sesqui-oxide and M<SP>1</SP> is lead or a metal of the second periodic group, the contact being carried out at a temperature and a time of contact such that substantially all the sulphur-containing compounds are removed. M may be iron, manganese, chromium or cobalt and Ml calcium, barium, strontium, magnesium, zinc or cadmium. The porous mass may be prepared by mixing equimolar quantities of the selected oxides into a pasty mass with water which is then treated with ammonium bicarbonate or carbon dioxide and ammonia, the resulting mass being moulded and heated at between 400‹ and 800 C. Regeneration of used porous mass may be effected by treatment with a gas containing free oxygen at a temperature below the sintering temperature of the mass, possibly with a further treatment, after cooling, with a solution of ammonium bicarbonate and heating at between 400<SP>0</SP> and 800‹ C. In an example a fuel gas containing 240 mg./ cm. of organic sulphur compounds was contacted with a porous mass containing a compound with the formula Fe 2 O 3 , MgO at between 320‹ and 400‹ C. with a contact time of 7 seconds. The treated gas contained less than 1 mg./cm. of organic sulphur compounds.
