916,841. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. HESSER, MASCHINENFABRIK-A.G., FR. Sept. 4, 1961 [Sept. 7, 1960], No. 31658/61. Class 42 (1). Heat sealing apparatus comprises a pair of continuously heated, pivoted, sealing jaws 1, 2, a pair of clamping jaws 9, 10 movable relatively to the jaws 1, 2 to grip the work to be sealed, and coverings of non-adherent material interposed between the sealing jaws, the arrangement being such that after the jaws have been closed in a sealing operation the clamping jaws cannot be parted from the work until the sealing jaws have been parted by a specific amount. The jaws 1, 2 having heaters 3, 4 are secured to arms 5, 6 pivoted at a fulcrum 24. The jaws 9, 10 to grip the mouth of a filled bag to be sealed are mounted on arms 7, 8 pivoted about the fulcrum 24 and have slots therein through which the jaws 1, 2 pass. Glass fibre strips 14 coated with polytetrafluoroethylene or silicon rubber mask the sealing surfaces of the jaws 1, 2 and are held under tension by springs 25 and bars 26. Springs 15, 16 cause the jaws 9, 10 to contact the bag mouth before the jaws which, after sealing, are retracted a small amount with the jaws 9, 10 and the strips 14 still clamping the seam. Pins 19 on the arms 7, 8 sliding in a slot 17 in a link 18 secured to the arms 5, 6 ensure that when the arms 5, 6 open further the jaws 9, 10 are retracted. Channels 20 supply cooling air through nozzles 21 which are closed during sealing by pivoted flaps 23 operated by the jaws 1, 2.
