Abstract

Apparatus for utilizing the combustion heat of low quality coal such as liquite, brown coal, <PICT:0913635/III/1> &c., e.g. for the decomposition of sodium bicarbonate to CO2 and soda ash, the dehydration of caustic soda, the calcination of charcoal, or the decomposition of natural oil, comprises a cylindrical metal kiln 2 which is rotatable, by a motor 15 through a chain belt 18, in bearings 11 and is heated within a heating chamber 1 which is filled with a heat carrier 4 consisting of e.g. a non-ferrous metal or a glassy or inorganic salt material or a mixture of such substances and accommodates a heat exchange pipe 3. Air is delivered to a perforated pipe 6 extending into the kiln 2 from one end opening 2b and coal, which is continuously charged from a hopper 5 into the opposite end opening 2a of the kiln, is ignited by a burner which is introduced into the opening 2a through a door 9a in a smoke box 9 having a chimney 10. After the heat carrier 4 has fused the kiln is rotated and some of the liquid carrier seeps through gaps 19 between the kiln and corresponding openings in the sides of the chamber 1 to act as packing rings. The carrier 4 also creeps into the gaps 20 between the kiln and a pair of ring-shaped tanks 12 arranged around the ends of the kiln. Water is introduced into the tanks 12 to solidify the heat carrier in the gaps 20 and to equalize the fused heat carrier. Stirring paddles 8 within the kiln urge the fuel towards the end 2b of the kiln from which spent ash is ejected. Steam for superheating or water for steam generation may be supplied to the pipe 3. The pipe 3 may be replaced by a container for carrying coal for carbonization. In a modification a stationary kiln is provided with a blow-pipe which is contructed as a screw-conveyer.
