Abstract

A method for burning waste materials having a great variation of combustible components, in which waste materials are placed in hermetically sealed collection containers (18) of burnable material and are introduced into a combustion passage in the packed condition. Each collection container is subjected to a precombustion controlled as a function of the inflammability of its contents and delivered to uncontrolled combustion only after attaining a predetermined degree of combustion. Precombustion may be controlled by varying the supply of independent energy and/or varying the stay in the precombustion zone. Precombustion may be observed visually by a camera installed in the furnace. Substantial amounts of liquid are separated from the waste materials subjected to precombustion and are gradually evaporated. The combustion furnace for carrying out the method has a combustion chamber (43) and an entry passage (12-15) preceding it where the collection containers (18) are introduced, and a precombustion chamber (35-38) with independent heating (45) is arranged between the entry passage and the combustion chamber. The precombustion chamber may be elevated relative to the combustion chamber and its grate. <IMAGE>
