Abstract

<PICT:0432714/III/1> Sulphur dioxide is obtained from refuse sulphuric acids such as those from the refining of mineral oil by introducing them together with carbonaceous fuels and air into a rotary furnace where the fuel and the carbon content of the refuse acids are eliminated by combustion. Suitable fuels are coal, coke, oils, waste products such as acid sludges, spent bleaching earths &c. Pulverized coal, gas or oil may also be burnt as fuel to provide auxiliary heating. The refuse acid and fuel may be introduced separately or in admixture, or the mixing may take place inside the furnace. The refuse acid may be injected into the furnace either in parallel flow or in counter flow to the furnace gases. Refuse acid is introduced through an atomizer 11, which is supplied by compressed air by a pipe 12, into a rotary furnace 1. The rotary furnace is provided with a degasefying zone 3, a combustion zone 4 and a secondary combustion zone 5 and is subdivided by baffle rings 6. Liquid or solid fuel is introduced from a bunker 14 via a pipe 15. The air supply is so regulated that the cone of atomized acid extends as far as possible into the zone 4. The injection is preferably so regulated that the outer part of the cone does not come into contact with the furnace walls or the burning fuel. The coke which is not consumed in the rotary furnace 1 passes over the outer rim of the zone 5 into a stationary chamber 2 provided with a grate 7 where the combustion is completed. The chamber 2 is provided with a baffle wall 8 which throws down any coke dust carried along by the gases. The sulphur dioxide containing gases finally leave through a flue 9. The rotary furnace may also be provided with turning devices or scrapers. The sulphur dioxide gases, after if necessary being subjected to treatment in any electrical gas purifying plant may be catalytically converted into sulphuric acid without predrying. Specification 411,793 is referred to.
