[Also in Groups XXIV and XXXIII] The cable 5 of an aircraft arresting gear is connected at each end to a roller chain 4 engaging a chain wheel 3 on a shaft 2. A brake shoe 1 is applied to shaft 2 by a piston and cylinder device 9<SP>1</SP> connected by a pipe 9 to a piston and cylinder device 8 by which is mounted a roller 7 over which the chain 4 passes, so that the brake shoe pressure depends on the chain tension. The pipes 9 on opposite sides of the runway are interconnected by a pipe 10 to equalize the braking effects. In Fig. 5, the chain passes over a roller 11 on one arm of a bell-crank lever, the other arm applying a brake shoe 1<SP>1</SP> to a drum 2a on shaft 2, and the bell-crank levers on opposite sides of the runway are mechanically interconnected. In modifications, guide rollers ensure that the angular disposition of the chain, which varies as the aircraft moves along the runway, does not affect the braking pressure. In Fig. 7, each chain runs over two chain wheels 3, each connected to a shaft 2 (one shown) provided at each end with discs 17 interleaved with discs 18 on the brake housing 16, the discs being free for axial movement. The discs can be pressed together to a greater or lesser extent by an annular piston 19, returnable to a datum position by resilient rubber blocks 20.
