Abstract

869,070. Railway vehicle brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Oct. 21, 1957 [Oct. 27, 1956], No. 32822/56. Class 103 (1). In a braking system for railway vehicles the degree of application of the main brake is subjected to the variation in the amount of friction existing between the rail and a skid-shoe so as to prevent locking of the main brake under all load, speed and rail-wheel adhesion conditions. In the embodiment disclosed, assuming the vehicle to be travelling to the left, as shown in the drawing, when vacuum cylinder 12 is actuated to apply the vehicle brakes, the piston therein moves upwardly and piston-rod 11, bell-crank 1, rod 3, bellcrank 6 are actuated to cause roller 16 to press on arcuate surface 17 of the vertical member 18 carrying a cast-iron shoe 27 and force the latter into frictional engagement with rail 28 against the force of spring 23. This frictional engagement will cause the member 18 to pivot in a counter-clockwise direction about a pivot 20 to move the arm 30 to the left, causing the lever 31 to pivot in the same direction about its pivot 32 and pull the rod 48 to pull pincer arms 37, 38 together to press the frictionpads 43 against the opposite radial faces of the disc 35 with a force which is directly proportional to the coefficient of friction existing between the shoe 27 and the rail 28. The amount of this friction between the rail and the shoe will depend on the speed and weight of the vehicle, and the amount of verticallydownward pressure applied to the member 18 by the vacuum cylinder. This will, at the same time, be further subject to the frictional conditions existing between the shoe and the rail. If the vehicle is travelling to the right, contact of the shoe 27 with the rail 28 will rotate to the member 18 in a clockwise direction, pulling arm 30 and lever 31 to the right and causing the brake to operate in the manner disclosed above. Instead of vacuum operation, the apparatus may be adapted to operate by fluidpressure, electrical or mechanical means of known types. Specification 712,534 is . referred to.
