Abstract
733,207. Railway track braking systems. STRACHAN & HENSHAW, Ltd. Dec. 9, 1953 [Dec. 10, 1952; Nov. 2, 1953], Nos. 31339/52 and 30245/53. Class 103 (1). A railway track braking system for use in shunting yards or for other purposes whole a predetermined degree of braking is required, comprises basically, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the provision of rollers 32 and 34 on the ends of an arm 30 disposed in the path of a vehicle wheel, so that a running wheel displaces one roller and then the other, thus causing rotation of a shaft 8 having a friction cone memter 6 urged into contact with a fixed outer cone member 4 by a spring 14, the consequent frictional action causing a retardation of the vehicle. Any number of such brake units may be used and by use of a suitable pawl and ratchet mechanism, they may have only one arm and roller, the arm being returned to position by a spring. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 9, such brake units are disposed between the rails, and can be put out of action by a rod which pivots arms 106, thus through quick-pitch threads 102 causing axial movement of a nut 86 which moves the friction member 6 out of engagement with the member 4. Automatic adjustment mechanism comprising a pawl-andratchet device 90, 92 is provided to take up wear. Fig. 12 shows a form of brake unit in which the friction elements comprise a series of alternate fixed and rotary discs 134-136 and 138-140 applied by a spring 154 and releasable by fluid pressure applied to one side of a plunger 162. As shown in Figs. 14 and 15 the brake units, which in this case do not have rollers, may be arranged in a series on a track arranged to be movable along a track laid in a recess between the main rails 20.
