Abstract

904,348. Ammunition; pyrotechnic devices and compositions therefor. BUCK, H. May 30, 1960 [May 29, 1959], No. 19080/60. Classes 9 (1) and 9 (2). An air-tight, shatterable container houses a priming composition containing red phosphorus, an explosive charge and an igniter, the igniter on being activated producing sufficient heat to temporarily change part at least of the red phosphorus to white phosphorus, so that if the container is shattered within a given time, the priming fires the charge. A metal powder such as magnesium or aluminium and/or smoke generating agents may be added to the priming composition. Fig. 1 shows a hand grenade having a body 1 of moulded synthetic plastic or cast metal on to which is screwed a cap 3 carrying a fuze tube 4 sealed by a foil 9 of tin or celluloid. Within the tube 4 is a delay-action fuze 5 attached to fuze cord 6 and connected to a delay 8. A demolition charge within the body 1 contains red phosphorus. The delay-action fuze generates sufficient heat to destroy the foil 9 and convert the red phosphorus into white phosphorus without affecting the explosive unless air is admitted to the charge within a given time. Magnesium or aluminium powder or shot may be added to the charge. In a second embodiment the phosphorus-containing priming composition is used to ignite an incendiary mixture. Fog-generating agents may be incorporated. The priming composition may be used in a land mine or with flares.
