Abstract
864,238. Blasting charges. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION, and WELEX Inc. Jan. 14, 1960 [Jan. 14, 1959], No. 1369/60. Class 9(1). In the shaped charge described and claimed in Specification 785,155 the barrier of inert material is replaced by a barrier 47 of explosive material having a low detonation velocity. The explosive may be finely divided RDX, cyclonite, TNT or PETN mixed with an inert diluent such as plaster of Paris, salt, powdered glass or synthetic resin. The shaped charge is housed in a case 30 having an integral boss 32 at the rear in which is an ignition fuze cord 34 and a booster. The booster charge 38 may be compressed cyclonite. The cavity housing the booster flares outwardly to form a frusto-conical chamber housing high explosive behind the barrier 47. The explosive also fills an annulus around the barrier and a cup-shaped chamber 41. A liner 46, e.g. of copper, closes the recess in the charge 45, which is RDX containing 9% wax. The barrier 47 is a mixture of 10% RDX and 90% plaster of Paris and is bounded by a flat rear face and a concave forward face. To assemble the charge, RDX is compressed in the case 30 by a punch with the configuration of the liner 46. A hole is then drilled through the centre of the RDX, to remove the explosive from the booster cavity and make room for the barrier 47. A booster is then inserted in the cavity 35 before inserting a sandwich of RDX containing the barrier 47, the sandwich being formed in a separate die. In a modification, the barrier has a frusto-conical peripheral wall.
