Abstract

Filaments, films &c. having a metallic lustre and comprising a highly polymeric ester of a dicarboxylic acid and a dihydric alcohol, said polyester being capable of being formed into filaments which when cold drawn show by X-ray pattern molecular orientation along the fibre axis, are produced by drawing filaments or films of the polyester, which has an initial birefringence of not more than 0,01, at its natural draw ratio, at a temperature below 80 DEG C., preferably 25 DEG -75 DEG C., and at a drawing speed between 2 and 17 yards per minute, the process conditions being so correlated that the draw ratio is at least 5,0. The drawing speed is defined as the rate at which the fully drawn material is caused to move relative to the drawing neck. The drawing temperature is defined as the temperature of the yarn &c. just prior to the point where it starts to draw. The filaments &c. are preferably allowed to age at room temperature for 24 to 48 hours before being drawn, but may be aged for 1-2 hours at 60 DEG -120 DEG C. before being drawn. The drawn yarn &c. may be heat stabilized at 100 DEG -200 DEG C. or over while allowing it to shrink controllably 0-35% of its original length. The neck produced in the present invention is extremely sharp, the shoulder of the neck forming an abrupt angle greater than 44 degrees with the fibre axis. Examples are given of the drawing of polyethylene terephthalate yarns, ribbons, monofilaments and films. Specifications 578,079, 785,978, 903,915 and U.S.A. Specification 2,352,725 are referred to.
