Abstract

Semi-melt spun polyvinyl alcohol filaments, having a tenacity not exceeding 1,5g/denier after drying to less than 10% moisture, are drawn to 5 to 15 times their original length at a temperature above 140 DEG C., but not exceeding the melting point of the filaments. In "semi-melt" spinning a concentrated solution of the spinning material in a suitable solvent is made at a high temperature, so that on spinning into air the solution is coagulated by cooling, as well as by evaporation. The dried filaments may be subjected to a preliminary hot drawing if desired, and the filaments may be wound up at a speed of 0,3 to 1,0 times the linear extrusion speed of the spinning solution. After the hot drawing the filaments may be heated at constant length, or while free to shrink, suitably up to 20%, at a temperature not lower than that used in the hot drawing. In a preferred method, a liquid polyvinyl alcohol/water mixture is formed having a polyvinyl alcohol content of 30-65% by weight, preferably 40%, the polyvinyl alcohol having a degree of polymerization of 1,700, and is semi-melt spun under such conditions of temperature and spinneret-hole size as to avoid bubble formation. The filaments formed are dried, while avoiding drawing as far as possible, until their water content is below 10% by weight, to produce filaments of tenacity not exceeding 1,5 g/denier, which are then drawn to 5 to 15 times their original length at a temperature above 140 DEG C., and finally heat-set with 0 to 20% shrinkage. Specification 895,389 is referred to.
