Abstract
A travelling bundle of filaments of polyethylene terephthalate is stretched in a continuous manner at a temperature between 325 DEG F and 450 DEG F but the bundle is not thereafter heat-set by holding it for an appreciable time, under a tension sufficient to prevent it from shrinking, at a temperature equal to or higher than the temperature at which it was stretched. The thus treated yarn has a tenacity of 7-9 grams per denier both before and after shrinkage, and if maintained at a temperature between 230 DEG and 275 DEG F while being allowed to shrink freely for a period sufficient to ensure that substantially no further shrinkage occurs, and then allowed to cool to normal room temperature, has an elongation at break of not over 12% and a shrinkage of not more than 4% when reheated and maintained at 230 DEG F for 4 hours and a shrinkage of not more than 6,25% when reheated and maintained at 275 DEG F for 4 hours. A high tenacity polyethylene terephthalate yarn sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Dacron" may be hot-stretched 15% or more at a temperature within the range 325 DEG F to just below the melting point of the polymer. It has been found that, if the treated yarn is subjected to a "heat setting" step, this step no longer effects a decrease in the shrinkage of the yarn when maintained at 250 DEG F. Yarns such as "Dacron 5100" are preferably hot stretched 20% and yarns of initially lower tenacity, such as "Dacron 5500," are preferably stretched to a greater degree. In an example, zero twist 50-filament "Dacron 5100" yarn having a tenacity of 6,6 grams per denier and an elongation at break of about 8,4% is stretched 18% at about 400 DEG F, but without heat-setting. The tenacity of the yarn is thereby increased to about 9 grams per denier and its elongation at break is reduced to about 7%. After being maintained at 248 DEG F for 1 hour at no load the tenacity of the yarn is only reduced to 8,3 grams per denier and its percentage elongation at break is only increased to 11,0%. The stretching of the yarns may be effected by passing them from a bank of feed rolls through an oven maintained at the prescribed temperature to a bank of draw rolls driven at a higher peripheral speed. Instead of an oven, a hot-plate maintained at an appropriate temperature may be used. A few turns, preferably two turns, of Z-twist per inch are preferably imparted to the yarn before the hot stretch treatment to improve the weavability of the yarn. Yarns treated as described above may be used to weave fabrics which are then coated in turn with methylene diisocyanate and chlorosulphonated polyethylene (see Group VIII). Specifications 603,840 and 679,619 are referred to.
