Abstract
<PICT:0900441/IV(a)/1> <PICT:0900441/IV(a)/2> <PICT:0900441/IV(a)/3> An artificial filament of cellulose esters or of entirely synthetic material has the form of a ribbon (Fig. 1) folded on itself widthwise to form a central cavity 3 extending substantially throughout the length of the folded ribbon, and has two longitudinal recesses 1 and 2 in its surface. Such filaments may be made of acetone-soluble cellulose acetate or of cellulose tricetate or of other simple or mixed esters of cellulose, e.g. cellulose butyrate, propionate, acetobutyrate and acetopropionate. Threads may be made of such filaments, or may contain up to one-third of the total number of filaments, of filaments of other cross-sectional shape. The filaments are made by extruding a spinning solution through a spinning nozzle (Fig. 2) consisting of one or more groups of three substantially rectangular orifices whose longitudinal axes extend along the sides of a triangle (Fig. 3), the distance (d) between the neighbouring ends of each two consecutive orifices being approximately equal to the width (1) of the orifice. Preferably, the orifices lie as shown, with their longitudina axes along the sides of an equilateral triangle.
