Abstract
328,312. British Celanese, Ltd., and Taylor, W. I. Nov. 21, 1928. Yarns and threads. - Flattened or ribbon-like products are obtained by applying a solvent or softening agent to artificial filaments so as to render them sticky or tacky, and then submitting them to pressure in such a manner that the filaments unite to form a ribbon, tape or straw-like product. The pressure may be applied continuously or intermittently so as to produce along the length of the filaments alternately flattened or rounded portions or flattened material of which some parts are greater in width than others. Crinkled products similar to millinery straw may also be produced. The filaments may be treated individuallv with the solvent, or they may be treated while associated as a twisted or untwisted thread, in ,particular, the initial material mav be a knitting cord in which case the product has a crinkled or twisted appearance. Dyes or other colouring matters may be applied to the filaments to be united, for example, a dye or metallic or other powder may be incorporated in the solvent or softening agent; and striped effects may be produced by incorporating coloured filaments. Fine metallic wires or strips such as tinsel may also be incorporated in the flattened product. The treatment is particularly applicable to filaments made of cellulose acetate or other cellulose derivatives, in which case suitable solvents are acetone, triacetin, ethyl lactate, and diacetone alcohol either alone or mixed with water or alcohol. The filaments may be treated continuously with their production, or subsequently thereto. The products obtained may be woven or otherwise formed into fabrics or articles, and they may also be used in millinery or for electric insulation. The solvent is preferably applied in quantities just sufficient to cause adhesion of the filaments ; it may be applied by spraying or immersion of the filaments, as an extremely thin film by means of moistened rollers, rods, wicks, &c., or in the form of vapour. The pressure is conveniently applied by one or more pairs of rollers; and the rollers may be plain, toothed, embossed, or regularly or irregularly corrugated or fluted. As shown, a bundle of filaments 7, Fig. 1, leaving the spinning cell 8 is passed round a feed roller 9 together with, if desired, other yarns &c. from a reel 17, is then passed in contact with a wick 10 depending into a vessel 12 containing the solvent, is next led between a pair of pressure rollers 13, after which it contacts with a second wick 14 moistened with a lubricant such as olive oil, and is finally wound on a roller 15. As regards the pressure rollers 13, both are preferably driven as by gearing 27, Fig. 3, and the upper roller is mounted in a fork 20 and is held in position by means of a screw abutment 19 or is pressed down by a spring or weight. Specification 326,462 is referred to.
