Abstract

A bundle, tow or yarn of continuous filaments wholly or mainly of "recessed" cross-section e.g. Y-, U-, X- or H-shape or mixtures thereof, as produced by spinnerets with non-circular e.g. triangular, semi-circular, square or star-shaped orifices, is bulked by subjection to two or more successive crimping operations, e.g. compression in a stuffer-box, to impart a non-rectilinear configuration in more than one plane to the filaments. Prior to each crimping operation the filaments may be lubricated, e.g. with water or an aqueous composition, quaternary ammonium compound or compositions exemplified in Specification 747,499. The filaments may be of cellulose derivatives including triacetate, polyamides, polyesters including polyethylene terephthalate and polyurethane, or vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymers.
