Abstract

Threads or yarns of high air content are made by separately making fibres or filaments of the same synthetic polymer but having two or more differently shaped cross-sections and then mixing the fibres or filaments together. Preferred cross-sections include circular; elliptical, rectangular, dentate and star-shaped, and the fibres or filaments may be crimped, either before or after working up into a thread or yarn. Specified starting materials include polyamides (e.g. polycaprolactam), polyesters, polyacrylonitrile, polyolefins (e.g. polypropylene), and polyvinyl alcohol. Examples describe the spinning of such yarns by the worsted yarn process from polyethylene terephthalate fibres, and by the cotton spinning process from polyacrylonitrile fibres. Such threads and yarns are suitable for making warm underwear, voluminous suiting and costume cloth.
