Abstract
Undrawn or incompletely drawn continous filaments of synthetic linear polymers, e.g. polyureas, polyurethanes, polyesters, polytriazoles, or polyamides, in the form of low or zero twist yarn or tow, are rendered potentially crimpable by drawing or stretching the yarn or tow at a draw ratio of at least 2 whilst the filaments are in solid state and false-twisted condition without appication of heat or with application only of heat insufficient to cause setting, and the yarn or tow, prior also or subsequent to manufacture into knitted or woven fabrics or articles, is relaxed to develop curl and crimp therein. The filaments may be set by heat and, optionally, water or steam simultaneously with or subsequent to the relaxing. The false-twist may be applied by twist tubes, e.g. as described in Specifications 590,914 or 797,051. Examples describe the invention applied to yarn or tow of 180-24,120 denier, with draw ratios up to 4,2 false-twister speeds of 5000 - 39,000 r.p.m. and draw rolls speeds of 50 - 400 feet per minute.
