Abstract
900,043. Drying air and gases. WOODS OF COLCHESTER Ltd. Nov. 30, 1960 [Dec. 3, 1959], No. 41132/59. Class 34 (1). A dehumidifier comprises a thermoelectric device providing a pair of heat exchange surfaces which are cooled and heated respectively by the Peltier effect, the surfaces being positioned in a duct through which flows gas, moisture being condensed to the cold surface and the air and gas temperature being subsequently raised by passage over the heated surface. The dehumidifier comprises a vertical duct 1 having a thermoelectric device comprising a thermocouple assembly formed of blocks 8 which are electrically connected to provide hot and cold junctions at the upper and lower surfaces respectively, each set of junctions having a heat exchange surface formed from vertically disposed metallic fins 11, 12 respectively. The duct has a fan 7 at an upper outlet 2 to draw air through a pair of vertically disposed air inlets 3, 4, having vertically sliding, linked shutters 5, 6 to differentially vary the areas of the inlets and to admit the gas to the duct at a position between the surfaces so that the volume of gas flowing over the heated surfaces is greater than that flowing over the cooled surfaces. Each assembly which comprises a block and fins 11, 12 is resiliently mounted on a common bar 19 by spring means 21 and supported on angle plates 20 secured to the duct walls. A thermostat (not shown) is embedded in a cold surface and is arranged to cut off the current when the temperature of the cooled surface falls below a specified limit.
