Abstract
<PICT:0902400/III/1> An air cooled condenser particularly suitable for the condensation of vapour of substances having a melting point at or near atmospheric temperature comprises a condenser unit through which vapour to be condensed follows a downward path, a fan positioned to cause a current of cooling air to flow past exterior surfaces of the condenser unit in a direction across the flow of vapour, a casing enclosing both the condenser unit and the fan and forming a channel between the condenser and casing through which part or all of the current of cooling air can be recirculated past the said exterior surfaces of the condenser unit openings in the casing for the inlet of fresh air and outlet of warm air, and adjustable opening and closing means such as louvres fitted to one or both of the openings whereby the proportion of fresh air to recirculating air which flows past the said exterior surfaces of the condenser unit can be controlled. In a preferred embodiment the material to be condensed enters a supply pipe 1 and passes through distributer conduits 3 to 2 condenser units 2, at the bottom of which are condensate collecting chambers 4 from which the condensate passes to a pipe 6 and is removed through an outflow pipe 12. Units 2 are enclosed in a casing 13 and fresh air is sucked in through an intake opening 21 in the direction of the arrow V by means of a fan 16. The intake of air is controlled by means of 3 shutters in an adjustable louvre 22 and the outgoing air is controlled by a similar louvre 24 on the opposite side of the casing 13. Below a horizontal partition 25 is an air heater 26 comprising finned tubes which are steam heated. This air flow is partly controlled by two shutters 29 which supply the air in direction Y and partly by a by-pass louvre 31 which controls the air in the direction Z. Two thermostats (not shown) are provided and the louvres may be controlled by hand or by relay control actuators, see Fig. 4 (not shown).
