Abstract

A drying cabinet comprises a compartment 1 having rods 6 for items of washing, fan 4 for circulating air in a closed path in compartment 1, heater 7 for heating the circulating air, and heat exchanger 10 for cooling the circulating air to condensate water therefrom, the cooling medium in the heat exchanger being air from the atmosphere, which air is drawn into the heat exchanger via aperture 13 covered with grid 21 by centrifugal pump 19 (or a tangential fan) and discharged to the atmosphere via outlet 24 and conduit 25. The heat exchanger comprises spaced parallel metal (e.g. Al) plates 14 defining flow spaces for the circulating drying air and the cooling medium. The paths of the drying air and cooling medium in the heat exchanger are defined by alternate spaces and the paths therein extend transversely of each other. The plates 14 are separated by corrugated aluminium strips 16 and rubber strips 15 limit the boundaries of the flow spaces. Shutters 29 and 30 are electrically controlled to close to seal the compartment 1 when the drying operation is being performed, and to open to ventilate the compartment 1 when no drying operation is being performed. A plastics container 26 catches the condensed water and a warning system 28 indicates when the container is full. The cooling air may be cooled by passage over wicks 23 immersed in water chambers 22. The apparatus may be provided with a thermostat and humidistat 35 for controlling the heater and a timer mechanism 34 for controlling the length of the drying operation.
