Abstract
890,233. Air conditioning systems. COTTS, L. C., and BRENNER, H. G. June 11, 1958 [Oct. 28, 1957], No. 18661/58. Class 137 An air diffuser for use in a forced air conditioning system comprises a chamber with an air outlet extending substantially full length of said chamber, an air inlet opening of a smaller longitudinal dimension than the chamber and connected to the forced air supply duct, and an electrical heating element mounted in the chamber above the air inlet. In a preferred embodiment (Fig. 2), the air outlet 36 is intermediate the height of the chamber 10 so that the part of the chamber above the outlet forms a conversion chamber to convert the velocity air pressure to static air pressure. The heating element 52 is removably mounted in a carrier directly above the air inlet 40, at least part of the heater being above the outlet 36, and the operation of the heater is controlled by a thermally responsive limit switch 58 set to open at about 170‹F. An air conditioning system incorporating the diffusers 10 in different parts or rooms of a building is shown in Fig. 1. The diffuser air inlets 40 are connected by ducts 80 containing dampers 82 to a main trunk 84 leading to a central air circulator 86 which is connected to several air return ducts 88 communicating with the spaces in which the diffusers 10 are located. A blower 90 provides a forced air circulation through return ducts 88, unit 86, trunks 84 and 80 to the diffusers 10 for discharge into the spaces to be conditioned. The unit 86 includes a filter 94, cooling coils 96, heating coils 98 either gas or oil fired or electrically heated, and, optionally, a humidifier. The coils 96 and 98 are controlled by suitable control elements and the blower 92 and the heating elements of the diffusers 10 are both controlled through electrical relays 112 and thermostat 114. Alternately, the heaters of individual diffusers may be separately controlled through thermostats 130. In another arrangement, either of the thermostats 114, 130 may also control the heating element 98 and the thermostat 114 may also control either or both of heater 98 and cooler 96. The blower may be arranged to operate whenever any room or zone requires heat or it may be operated continuously. Alternately, for the blower, a separate thermostat may be used which is responsive either to the air inside or outside the room or to the temperature difference.
