[Also in Group XXI] A fire-extinguishing foam-producing apparatus comprises a butterfly valve 10 controlling the flow of water to a pump 1 which is associated with a foam-stabilizing solution inductor 7 in circuit between the delivery side 2 and suction side 3 of the pump, and tappings upstream and downstream of the valve leading to opposite ends of a cylinder 13 containing a piston 12 mechanically connected to the valve 10, the area of the piston subjected to pressure through the upstream the tapping being less than that subjected to the pressure through the downstream tapping. If the pressure of the supply 5 is exceptionally high a valve 47 in a pipe 46 which runs frcm the cock 47 to the delivery line 12 may be opened and a valve (not shown) in the pipe 15 closed. In the form of the apparatus described, Fig. 2 (not shown), the spindle of the butterfly valve is connected to one end of a crank the other end of which is pivoted to the rod 33 of the piston 12 extending from one end of the cylinder 13 the other end of which is pivoted upon a hollow spindle which extends from the water pipe at a point downstream of the valve 10, and places the cylinder 13 in communication with the water stream at that point.
