Abstract
893,657. Photographic image receiving elements. INTERNATIONAL POLAROID CORPORATION. Nov. 11, 1958 [Dec. 3, 1957], No. 36228/58. Class 98(2). A support as of cellulose acetate or cellulose acetate coated baryta paper subcoated as with a mixture of cellulose nitrate and partially hydrolysed vinyl alcohol is provided with an image-receiving layer comprising a vinyl alcohol-N-vinylpyrrolidone copolymer or a mixture of a polyvinyl alcohol and N-polyvinylpyrrolidone, and may be used to receive an image-wise distribution of colour-providing materials, especially a positive dye image resulting from treatment of an exposed silver halide emulsion layer with an alkaline solution containing a dye developer. In Example 1 commercially available PVA and PVP are dissolved in water, heated for cross-linking with hydrochloric acid and dimethylol urea, coated on such support and treated by the method of Specification 853,479 to receive a magenta positive image. Examples 2 and 3 describe, for comparison purposes, similar procedure with polyvinyl alcohol and nylon image receiving layers respectively. Example 4 describes production of the above mentioned copolymer from its ingredients using azobisisobutyronitrile as catalyst and similar use of a layer thereof. Dye mordants, oxidising agents, acids and alkalis may be incorporated into the layers and they may be used also in multicolour transfer processes.
