Abstract

856,792. Receiving materials for the silversalt diffusion-transfer processes. GENERAL ANILINE & FILM CORPORATION. April 24, 1959 [May 7, 1958]. No. 14146/59. Class 98(2) A support is coated with a layer comprising a polyalkyl vinyl ether/maleic anhydride copolymer, a hydrophobic resin or cellulose derivative; a silver halide developing agent, a silver halide complexing agent and a water soluble silver salt, the layer being rendered water receptive by treatment with an alkali. Such layer is tack-free after processing, dries quickly, and when used on a transparent support gives haze-free copies suitable for further copying as by the diazo process or for use in producing printing plates. In Example I these materials are polyvinyl methyl ether/ maleic anhydride, cellulose acetate, hydroquinone, 2-hydroxyethylallylthiourea, silver nitrate and a little nitric acid dissolved in mainly organic solvents and the mixture is coated on to cellulose triacetate film base, dried and then overcoated with monoethanolamine as the alkali. The back side of the base is coated with the first two of the materials and this coat is given the alkali treatment also. Reflex exposure and transfer procedure using a specified hypo-containing developer is described. Examples II-IX are directed to the replacement of one or other of the first pair of the materials of Example I with analogous substances, and others, also other supports, complexing agents, silver salts and such like are quoted. The silver salts are stated to aid in nucleation to form dense images, but the precise function of the complexing agents is not described, presumably they replace nuclei.
