891,977. Powered strap tensioners. SIGNODE STEEL STRAPPING CO. Aug. 18, 1960 [Sept. 24, 1959], No. 28644/60. Class 45. A powered (air motor 20) strap tensioning too: has a main frame 12 having a laterally extended foot 14 across which the strapping extends and slides, a tensioning wheel 18 hav ing a cylindrical strap engaging surface 154, a frame 16 mounting the wheel, for rotation in strap tensioning direction, extending across and closely adjacent the foot 14 so as to engage the strapping between the foot and the wheel, the frame 16 being pivotally mounted on the main frame 12 for limited swinging movement of the tensioning wheel toward and away from the foot 14. The tool also comprises biasing means (96, 100, 102) acting on the frame 16 urging wheel 18 into strap engaging positions and resilient stop means including a spring 128 carried by either the main frame 12 or the frame 16 and interposed therebetween to limit movement of the wheel 18 toward the foot 14 when there is no strapping in the tool but permitting movement of the wheel 18 into engagement with the strapping during the strap tensioning operation.
