Abstract

1,254,978. Grinding. TOYODA KOKI K.K. 28 Aug., 1970 [16 Sept., 1969], No. 41467/70. Heading B3D. Grinding apparatus comprises a grinding- wheel 3 and a driven wheel 4, such as a pulley, mounted on a spindle 2 for rotation therewith, the driven wheel being exchangeable for one 33 of smaller diameter as the diameter a of the grinding-wheel is reduced to b through use, and means 22 for preventing a grinding-wheel of diameter a being mounted on the spindle whilst the smaller diameter driven wheel is on the spindle. The spindle 2 is mounted in a head 1 having a guideway 1a for the base 9 of a motor 8 having a pulley 18 for driving the belt of the pulley 4 or 33, the base being adjustable by a screw 11 to tension the belt. A plate 13 is secured to the head 1 and rotatably supports one end 14<SP>1</SP> of a shaft 14, the other end 14<SP>11</SP> of which is rotatably mounted in a bearing 19 in the guard 5 for the grinding-wheel. The means 22, in the form of a pin, is eccentrically mounted on end 14<SP>11</SP> of the shaft, and a boss 16 is secured to the end 14<SP>1</SP> of the shaft and carries a flexible arm 24. One end of the arm carries a pin 30 for selective engagement with one or other of holes 31, 32 in the plate 13, and the other end of the arm is connected by a pivot 27 to a safetyarm 26 guided for movement by a pin-and-slot mechanism 26a, 28. The other end of the arm 26 has a pin 25 for extending into a recess in the pulley 4 or 33. With the smaller pulley on the spindle, the pin 25, by engaging the surface 33<SP>1</SP> of the recess, prevents movement of the arm 24 and hence the pin 22 prevents a grinding-wheel of diameter a being mounted on the spindle.
