Abstract

1354596 Grinding ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 9 Aug 1971 [8 Aug 1970] 37252/71 Heading B3D An orbital sander comprises a housing containing a drive motor 11, and a sanding plate 27 which is vibrated by the motor through a transmission member 21 and is supported relative to the housing by a plurality of elastomeric pillars 31 having a uniform cross-section over their entire length and received between the housing and sanding plate. The housing is formed in two parts secured together by screws 3<SP>1</SP> and has a handle 3 containing a trigger switch 8 for the motor 11, a separate cover 15 enclosing the commutator 12 and brushes 13, 14. The motor has a vertical shaft 10 which, at its lower end, drives a cooling fan 17 and a gear 19 of hard fabric meshing with a similar gear 20 rotatably mounted on a shaft 23. The gear 20 has a metal hub 21 housing an eccentric ball race 24 in which is a connection part 25 secured to the sanding plate 27 by a screw 26, the under surface of the plate having a pad 28 of felt. The pillars 31 have circular exteriors and square interiors which fit on square studs 29, 30 on the sanding plate and housing. Alternatively, the studs may be formed as collars or sockets.
