Abstract

890,401. Boring-bars. BREUNING, R. April 8, 1959 [April 26, 1958], No. 11908/59. Class 83 (3). A boring-bar 1 comprises a cutter 3 in a passage 2 enlarged for a cutter-adjusting screw 5, and a spring 6 supported by the shoulder 9 formed by the passage-enlargement for pressing the cutter against screw 5. A washer 10 is located between the shoulder 9 and one end of the spring, the other end of which engages the internally or (as shown) externally-coned head 13 of a shank 4 of the cutter. The head 13 engages a co-operating conical surface in the nut 5, which is formed with internal graduations 16 or peripheral graduations or both, co-operating with a scale on the bar. Keys 11 on the cutter engage keyways 12 in the passage, and a plate 32 clamped by a screw 35 against the pressure of a spring 36, locks the cutter. Alternatively, the clamping plate may be attached at one end to the bar (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) or the bar may be split and closed on to the cutter by the clamping screw (Fig. 5, not shown).
