Abstract

890,321. Wheel assembly; brake drums. KELSEY-HAYES CO. Nov. 30,1959 [Jan. 12, 1959], No. 40583/59. Classes 103(1) and 144 (1). A wheel and brake drum assembly comprises a brake drum I having an outer peripheral axial flange 3 and a generally radial web 4 to which is detachably secured, near the flange 3, a wheel rim 2, the brake drum being detachably mountable on a permanent hub 23 by means of a load-supporting annular plate 25 which is either detachably or permanently secured to the inboard side of the web 4 so that the latter is exposed on its outboard side and simulates a wheel body. As shown, the drum flange 3 has a cast-iron liner 11 cast therein and is formed with axial, circumferentially spaced cooling fins 7, the web 4 of the drum having spaced radial cooling ribs 10. The wheel rim 2 is of the wellbased type with circumferentially spaced radial tabs 14 welded to the underside of the rim well for engagement on mounting bolts 17. The bolts 17 are permanently secured in apertures 26 around the outer periphery of the plate 25 and extend either detachably or fixedly through apertures 20 in the drum web. The drum web 4 has an outboardly tapering conical portion 9 which extends radially inwardly beyond the inner periphery of the annular plate 25 and terminates in a barrel member 6 simulating a wheel hub. The outboard end of the barrel 6 may be closed by a detachable hub cap. In the arrangement wherein the annular plate 25 is permanently secured to the drum web, the web terminates radially outwardly of the inner periphery of the plate 25 to permit access to the nuts 31 by which the assembly is detachably secured to the hub 23, the nuts 31 being masked by the hub cap carried by the web.
