889,193. Automatic regulators. FERRANTI METERS Ltd., DENIS, and BELSEY, F. H. Oct. 2, 1958 [July 3, 1957], No. 20979/57. Class 38 (4). In an automatic regulator, the force to compress a carbon-pile 3 to vary its resistance is directly applied by a torque-motor 17 through an arm 11 and a push-rod 12. The electrical connections to the carbon-pile are made through an adjustable end-contact 5 and a light spring diaphragm 6 with a contact disc 19. When used as a field current regulator for a generator, a low-resistance at starting is provided by shunting the carbon-pile with a resistor or by applying pressure to the carbon-pile by a solenoid 20. The torque-motor comprises a rectangular laminated frame 7, having poles 8 carrying coils 9, and a slotted armature 10. The torque-motor may be replaced by a directlyacting solenoid.
